ALMACO pleads tax reduction for composites roof tiles
The Latin American Composite Material Association (ALMACO) initiated a process in which it requests the review of the tax of composite roof tiles in Brazil. The entity’s objective is to reduce the taxation from the current 15% to 5%.
Erika Bernardino Aprá, president of ALMACO, commented:
“We want to correct a problem that affects molders specialized in the manufacture of composites roof tiles”
Incorrectly, the product was classified as “plate” instead of “roof tile”, which resulted in a rate three times higher.
To support it in this action – ALMACO enters the process as a representative entity of economic category –, the association hired the traditional Nelson Wilians & Advogados lawyer office.
Lívia Faria de Moura, partner-director of the lawyer office, explained:
“The work will consist of preparing and presenting a new consultation on the tax classification of goods to the IRS, with a wording that specifies the product in an appropriate way.”
Once the draft has been approved by the members of ALMACO, the application will be sent to the General Taxation Coordination (COSIT) and presented at the IRS unit in São Paulo, Brazil.
Light, translucent, resistant to corrosion and 100% recyclable, composite roof tiles are widely used in industrial and residential applications. Today, around 35 Brazilian molders manufacture the product.
The companies that are part of ALMACO´s Roof Tiles Committee are as follows: Afort Telhas, Cersan, Cofibra Telhas, Cosmoplast, Fibralit, Fibrarte (Lux Telhas), Fibratel, Planefibra, Plastifibra, Reichhold Polynt, Owens Corning, Oswaldo Cruz and Novapol.
