Revolutionising composite repair with embedded ultra-fast healing technology

In today’s composites industry, when waste prevention tops the waste management hierarchy, the advent of healable materials marks a pivotal step towards a circular economy. By producing composites that are inherently designed for repair, manufacturers not only extend the lifetime of their products but also retain the economic value of the raw materials, avoiding the manufacture and creation of unnecessary waste. With that in mind, CompPair has developed the ultra-fast repair technology HealTech™, which ensures high-performance components remain in service longer, while drastically reducing maintenance costs and environmental impact.

READING TIME

1 minute, 20 secondes

HealTech™ is embedded in semi-products for manufacturing composite structures by LCM (Liquid Composite Moulding) and prepreg processes. The technology integrates ultra-fast repair directly within the composite, enabling in situ repair of matrix microcracks without additional resources or labour-intensive processes. When triggered by heat between 100-150°C, the healing mechanism activates and restores the component’s integrity in just 1 or 2 min, consistently recovering 100% of its mechanical properties while preserving weight and profile. This ultra-fast repair process aligns with waste prevention and resource efficiency principles, offering a compelling solution for industries demanding both performance and sustainability. HealTech™ has shown global applicability potential in the sports, mobility and aerospace sectors.

Repairing all types of composite damage

HealTech™ is engineered to address a broad spectrum of composite damage with exceptional efficiency and speed. All these repairs can be carried out in situ, directly on a finished part that can be returned to service immediately – eliminating costly downtime and additional processing steps.

To address delamination, which is a critical issue in composite structures, undermining the layers that are essential for load transfer and overall structural integrity, HealTech™ uses an autonomous repair process triggered by a rapid thermal activation. The result is an almost instantaneous restoration of mechanical performance, comparable to that of an undamaged laminate, without the need for traditional manual patching or additional resources. This in situ repair mechanism not only restores strength but also preserves the composite’s original aesthetic and properties.
