The Brazilian composites industry reported USD 1.657 earnings in 2011, which corresponds to a 10.4% increase in comparison with the previous year. In terms of volume, there has been a 1.5% growth, totaling 208,000 tons. The figures are part of the last survey conducted by Maxiquim for the Latin American Composite Materials Association (ALMACO).

“With last year’s GDP confirmed to be below 3%, we can consider our performance very good,” says Gilmar Lima, president of ALMACO. For him, the discrepancy between the growth rates of the two indexes – sales and consumption – should not be credited only to the continuous high prices of petrochemical inputs. “The best markets for composites in 2011 were those who demanded higher value-added parts, such as the automotive and the wind energy sectors. That is why our revenue has increased much more than the volume processed.”

Maxiquim forecasts a 12% increase in the sales of the Brazilian composites industry in 2012. “It is quite feasible, due to the fact that several projects initiated in 2011 will be accomplished now. In addition, we are in an election year and the government can not wait any longer to invest both in housing programs and in infrastructure works for the World Cup,” says the president of ALMACO.
